Off the Job Training Hours – what is it and why are they so important?

What are they?

A Supportive Learning Experience from Start to Finish 

Firstly it is a mandatory part of your apprenticeship.  It is calculated by an assumption the staff member works 30 hours a week x by the duration of the award, less holidays x 20%, therefore, our property awards are 18 months in duration and typically work out at 423 hours.
 
 A lot of these hours are accounted for in the activities they complete as part of the award, which we refer to as ‘apprenticeship hours’ e.g., workbooks, assignments, teaching and learning sessions with your tutor, and working towards the activities required by your End Point Assessment.

Employer MUST support with these hours

 

However, you will need to support your employee(s) and contribute to these hours by maintaining activities, more commonly known as CPD (continuous professional development) or training diary entries.
 
You probably do a lot of these anyway, e.g., internal training, industry webinars, reading articles in the trade press, shadowing a colleague to learn a new skill and attending conferences.
 
Ultimately, as long as you are learning something new and it links back to the apprenticeships KSBs (Knowledge, Skills or Behaviours), you can use them towards the required hours.

Did you know?

No matter the duration of an apprenticeship, all staff can complete within 12 months and 1 day if they have gathered the required evidence and the training hour diaries are accounted for.

Importance for membership application and professional development

You are probably not used to logging these and it may appear to be painful.  However, it is a good habit to adopt in your career – it will help staff prepare for appraisals, or if you aspire to be a member of Propertymark or The Property Institute you will be required to maintain CPD and log as a condition of membership.
